I color balanced the photo to eliminate the yellow and orange cast. I also brought up the black levels slightly along with the contrast.

One of the items I did miss in the redo of the layout was the icon used at the end of the article, but I feel that I did replicate the layout itself nicely. 

Final Layout

I cropped all the pictures I used and brightened a couple of them. For the font color of the headline and deck I used tones from the main image on the first page. I also did some color adjustments to the main photo and the fire breathing shot.
